THE Commodore's 500 Club has been running for several years now, and during that time has benefitted the two charities, Ellen MacArthur Trust and Jubilee Sailing Trust by some £30,000 between them. Along the way, a number of members have found themselves receiving an unexpected cash bonus.
This year Commodore Colin Lewis has nominated Marie Curie Cancer Care as the Club's charity, and which will benefit from this year's 500 Club.
How does it work?
It's straightforward enough. Five hundred numbers are individually allocated to RSYC members who each undertake to contribute a fiver a month. Sometime during each month a public draw is made at a Club function and the winner receives a cheque for 50 per cent of the kitty for the month. the other half goes to the Commodore's charity.
Currently around 170 members participate in the 500 Club. If all 500 numbers were taken up, the monthly winner would receive £1,250. The other half of the kitty, less minor operating expenses go straight to Marie Curie Cancer Care, and could mean up to £12,000 for them in a full year.
