THE Royal Southampton Yacht Club is pleased to be associated with Toe In The Water, the tri-service sailing initiative which sets out to re-inspire injured servicemen through competitive sailing.

The organisation is the Club's nominated charity during Commodore Susan Lamb’s two year period of office.

Toe In The Water believes its role helps re-inspire, re-engage and re-integrate injured servicemen as an extension of rehabilitation work carried out by the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court in Surrey in the care of men and women who have sustained often traumatic injuries, including the loss of limbs, and believes  sailing helps them to move beyond their disability and to become re-inspired by life.

Competitive sailing is a physically and mentally challenging adventurous sport and provides a unique opportunity for injured men and women to sail and race on equal terms with their able bodied contemporaries.

It has already made its mark in the Solent having held a regular presence at Cowes since 2008, while in 2011 it was chosen as AAM Cowes Week's  charity. With three boats competing,  and RSYC honorary member Dee Caffari among skippers lending support, its presence was welcomed with affection both on the water and onshore.

The Commodore said: "I hope that as well as raising funds, the Royal Southampton may be able to assist by involving them in some of our racing.  I believe this to be a very worthy cause. “

Her son is a surgeon in the RAF and is involved in the very first steps of the treatment, recovery and rehabilitation of injured service personnel.
