ROYAL Southampton members have played a key role in the investigation into the loss of the yacht Ouzo and subsequent recommendations to yachtsmen.

The Club members who have taken a lead in the investigations into the hazards of poor radar visibility and subsequent Government commissioned reports surrounding the loss of the Ouzo are Professor Bill Mullarkey, managing director of the marine electronics research company dB Research, and Rob Warne, business development executive with QinetiQ.

They were the authors of a detailed report into radar visibility published in the Royal Southampton's magazine Yachter in March, and also on the Club's website.

Both are active leisure mariners who are personally and professionally interested in the safety of navigation and have spent many years studying how radar can enhance or reduce safety.

Both were involved in the investigation into the tragic loss of the yacht ouzo and caused them to consider how radar visibility influences safety.

Prof Mullarkey's company played a role in investigating the involvement of the ship Pride of Bilbao through an examination of its black box.

Mr Warne's team were involved in the QinetiQ recommendations on radar reflectors on board yachts, which was commissioned by the Government's Marine and Accident Investigation Bureau.

"It should be vital reading for all our members,'' said Prof Mullarkey.
