THERE will be an opportunity to learn more about proposals to improve the navigational access to the Port of Southampton at a specially arranged meeting at the Royal Southampton Yacht Club at Ocean Village on Friday, May 16.
Port owner Associated British Ports wants to deepen and widen the main approach channel and is keen to hear the views of yachtsmen and others who use Southampton Water and the Solent for recreation.
Deputy port manager Steven Young says the plans involve dredging at various locations throughout Southampton Water, at additional locations in the Solent and the eastern approaches. Underwater pipelines near the Fawley refinery will be sunk lower in the sea bed.
As a prelude to the work, ABP and the Government will be carrying out a detailed assessment of the impact of the proposals on nature conservation and ecology, fish and the fishing industry, marine archaeology, coastal protection and flood defences and the possible extent and impact of vibration and the dredging and pipeline work on wildlife - fish and birds.
"We would very much like to give organisations and individuals involved in the recreational interests of Southampton Water and the Solent, the opportunity to understand more about the proposals at first hand,'' said Mr Young.
Rear Commodore Sailing David Giddings said “The Commodore and I attended the presentation and discussion forum held at the City Cruise Terminal. We thought that members would find it interesting and asked Steven Young if he would repeat it at the Club”
The presentation begins at 1830 for 1900 on May 16 and should be of particular interest to both racing and cruising members.
So that we can gauge numbers, please book with Jacki and let her know if you would like to have supper afterwards.
