Safety on the Water

For each event, there is an ‘Officer-in-Charge’ who is responsible for all aspects of safety. Whilst we hope that you will be able to spend as long as possible on the water, he (or she) will limit the numbers afloat, limit those afloat to those with adequate experience, or abandon on-the-water activities completely if appropriate, for example in deteriorating weather conditions.

At all times, you must comply with directions to ensure your own safety and that of other participants.

You must be able to swim 50 metres in light clothing. However, recreational swimming is not allowed due to fast tides and boat movements.

Buoyancy aids and helmets and must be worn correctly when afloat.

Please try to remain close to other participants. Do not sail off alone. Take care not to go behind moored boats where the safety boat will not be able to see you.

If you are unfortunate enough to go aground, please do not raise the dagger board. It will stop you going further aground and make recovery easier. If you see someone else go aground, do not go to watch. You may well join them!

Keep covered as far as possible.

When not wearing a helmet, wear a hat, preferably with a rear bib and peak.
