Ever popular bar manager at Ocean Village, Brian Surry has pulled his last pint at the Club on his retirement after 21 years with the Royal Southampton, and his next visit to the Club will see him in front of the bar, rather than serving.
The Commodore, Peter Armitage, said at a farewell gathering yesterday that the Club's Executive had decided to bestow honorary life membership in recognition of his long and dedicated service.
Brian's final shift was lunchtime yesterday and more than 70 members turned up to wish him well. Joining him at the farewell gathering was his wife, Angela and four past Commodores were on hand to wish him a happy retirement.
The Commodore said: "He has without doubt contributed enormously to the Club both in carrying out his duties and creating the ambiance enjoyed by members, guests and organisations holding functions there. I am sure that over the years previous Commodores have been grateful that, whatever other problems they may have had to deal with none have occurred in the bar at Ocean Village under Brian’s watch."
He now plans to spend some time taking things easier and watching a bit of cricket. and football.
Taking over as bar and catering manager is former Gins' assistant steward, Michael Elvis, who has more than 30 years' experience in the hotel and catering business.
