Dee Caffari has launched the 2010 Ladies Who Launch Channel Challenge, an event designed to recognise and celebrate women’s contributions to sailing.

At a dinner launch held at the Royal Southampton, Dee told potential women crews to venture out of their comfort zones and take up the challenge to cross the Channel, sailing from Lymington to Cherbourg on May, 29. Andrea Golding says a similar event in 2002 earned £17,000 for Leukaemia Busters, and created a camaraderie and team spirit, boosting sailing confidence. Ostar record holder, Mary Falk was evidence that women are certainly not the ‘weaker vessel’!

The Charity to benefit from this event is Help For Heroes which provides support for wounded men and women. Hampshire Co-ordinator, Judy Horne says the charity has enjoyed wonderful success since it’s beginning and says many service charities are supported by Help For Heroes. We are all aware how essential their efforts are with troops returning from combat in need of rehabilitation and a chance to recover from the challenges they have faced abroad.

Organiser of the event, Laurie Bates says that for one day, everyday women sailors can emulate the successes of such champions as Dee Caffari, Dame Ellen Macarthur, and Sam Davies, all honorary members of the RSYC.

Seven boats are so far signed up for the event, with hopes growing for even more.
